The Econometrics and Data Science specialization is internationally oriented, fully taught in English, and will provide you with the necessary theoretical knowledge to succeed as an econometrician and data scientist for:

After you have graduated from this specialization you will receive the title of Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Econometrics and Operations Research, specialization Econometrics and Data Science. We are in the process of acquiring a separate International BSc in Econometrics and Data Science and we are expecting the approval of this Econometrics and Data Science BSc in 2018. Admission with a Dutch pre-university school diploma
You must hold a Dutch pre-university school diploma (VWO) or an equivalent to this, with a Mathematics B qualification or its equivalent. You will also need to supply proof of your English language proficiency.

You can study Econometrics and Data Science with the following pre-university profiles:

  • Nature and Technics
  • Economy and Society, complemented with Mathematics B
  • Culture and Society, complemented with Mathematics B


Admission with a Dutch HBO degree
You will be eligible for admission to the specialization in Econometrics and Data Science with proof of sufficient proficiency in Mathematics (Mathematics B).

If you don’t have Mathematics B at pre-university (VWO) level, you need to eliminate this deficiency first.

You may also be required to provide further proof of you proficiency in English. Check Examinations and language requirements (Dutch) for more information.

Dutch and 21 years or older?
Are you Dutch, 21 years or older and do you not meet the entry requirements listed above? You can apply with the colloquium doctum. You must obtain the following certificates:

  • Mathematics B
  • History

We expect Dutch applicants to complete the mandatory VU Matching programme. VU Matching consists of a questionnaire in VUnet and a matching activity. The matching activity for this specialization takes place between 31 May and 13 June 2018. The matching activity will give you a realistic impression of the specialization and helps you to check whether this programme meets your expectations. You’ll get an invitation for the matching activity via e-mail (please note that you need to log in to VUnet at least once to receive this invitation). You will then receive an e-mail inviting you to complete your application in the VU student portal. In the VU student portal you will be asked what specialization you want to apply for. Here you can indicate you want to apply for the specialization Econometrics and Data Science. Please make sure you fill out this question!

Applicants with a Dutch secondary school diploma must apply before 1 May. You will be informed about your admission within four weeks after the completion of your application (including all required documents).

How will you be spending your time?

Econometrics and Operations Research: Econometrics and Data Science is a full-time specialization, all courses are taught in English and all other communications are in English. The specialization takes three years to complete. An academic year has two semesters (September-January and February-June). A semester consists of two consecutive two-months blocks and a one-month block. You will work intensively on two courses simultaneously but some courses are spread over two blocks. During the one-month blocks at the end of the semesters, you will work on assignments in student teams. You will practice academic skills, research methods and personal development, with an international orientation.

In the first year of the Econometrics and Data Science specialization, the focus is on providing you with more mathematical skills (Analysis and Linear Algebra), key programming skills (Introduction to Programming with C or Java), and the foundations in statistics (probability and mathematical statistics). We also offer introductory courses in data science, economics, finance and ethics, in the first year. The second year is truly focussed on Econometrics and Data Science with introductory and intermediate courses in numerical methods, econometrics, data science (data structures, information retrieval, databases), statistics (computational statistics, multivariate statistics) and ethics. Throughout the first two years of the Bachelor, several data science cases (practical and hands-on) need to be carried out by groups of students. During the first semester of the third year the student follows a Minor programme; our recommendation is the Minor Applied Econometrics: a Big Data Challenge for All. The second semester in the third year offers three in-depth courses (dynamic econometrics, machine learning and financial econometrics) and is completed with a Econometrics and Data Science Project Thesis that is developed in cooperation with a group of data science companies and includes a lecture series and personal support from well-known data companies.

This specialization reflects the interdisciplinary nature of Econometrics and Data Science: working with data requires the mastery of many skills and concepts, including those traditionally associated with the fields of statistics, computer science, economics, finance, ethics and others. The Econometrics and Data Science specialization blends much of the pedagogical content from these disciplines but it is not the simple intersection. The integration of courses, with a balanced focus on theory and application, is a fundamental feature of an effective Econometrics and Data Science specialization and results in a synergistic approach to problem solving.
